A Thoughtful Approach to Puppy Adoptions During the Holidays
I’m proud to say my puppies bring so much joy and meaning to the families who adopt them. When they’re ready for their new homes, I’m happy to work with you to find the best timing for everyone. However, I don’t keep the kennel open on Christmas Day, and I worry about the reality of giving a puppy as a holiday surprise.
Imagine this: you collect a puppy on Christmas Eve—where will they be that night? Hiding them away from children or leaving them alone could be distressing, especially after just leaving their mother and familiar surroundings. This season is all about family, honesty, and love. I want your new puppy to come into your home in a way that’s gentle, joyful, and comfortable.
While I understand the appeal of a Christmas surprise, puppies grow every day. My dogs won’t stay 8 weeks old forever, and each of them is ready to meet their new family in their own time. Plus, as a breeder, I have ongoing costs to keep my pups healthy and happy while they wait for their families.
So here’s what I suggest: instead of planning a holiday surprise, consider picking up your puppy at the start of the school holidays or whenever you’re able to prioritise their transition fully. This will make for a smooth start to their new life with you.
In the end, the question is simple: is the excitement of a surprise worth more than starting your puppy off with the care, attention, and stability they deserve? I believe that by putting your puppy first, you’ll give them the best start in their forever home—and create memories that are truly in the spirit of the season.
